جان اشتاین بک، نویسنده‌ی امریکایی و برنده‌ی جایزه‌ی نوبل، در مارس ۱۹۴۸ به همراه رابرت کاپا، عکاس، برای تهیه‌ی گزارش عازم شوروی شد. یادداشت‌های وی همان سال در "هرالد تریبون" به چاپ رسید و کتاب "دفتر وقایع روزانه‌ی روسی"، رهاورد این سفر در سال‌های دور است. اینک پس از نیم قرن، تماشای شوروی از نگاه یک نویسنده‌ی امریکایی، فرصتی است برای تـأمل و تفکر.
