این رمان روایتی از قتل عام ارمنیان است. نسلکشی ارمنیان به کشتار دستهجمعی ارامنه ساکن سرزمینهای تحت کنترل امپراتوری عثمانی در زمان جنگ جهانی اول و مدتی بعد از آن اطلاق میشود. عده زیادی از ارامنه در این واقعه به قتل رسیدند و گروه بسیاری نیز تبعید شدند.
