داستان در زمان كشف حجاب اتفاق ميافتد. خانوادهی اصلاني از خانوادههاي قديمي و اصيل شريفجان است كه زمين كشاورزي بزرگي به نام جلال آباد دارد. اين زمین قبلا وقف شده، ولي بازماندگان حاضر به وقف آن نيستند و دعوا بين اصلاني و سرهنگ در جريان است. از سوي ديگر مريم، همسر اصلاني زني است كه از كشف حجاب استقبال زيادي كرده و با سر و وضع ناجوري در جامعه رفت و آمد دارد.
