«رو به باغ رفت، پا به علفزار گذاشت، آوای سیرسیرک‌ها او را احاطه کرد. زیر شاخه‌های توت بر تخته‌سنگی نشست و ساقه خشک گندمی را از زمین برداشت بین دو انگشت چرخاند، فکر کرد؛ چه زندگی ملال‌آوری، بلاهت محض، دور باطل، آسیاب دوباره به آنها برگشته بود بی‌فایده، هیچ‌چیز عوض نمی‌شد، زندگی او شبیه تعطیلاتی پایان‌ناپذیر ادامه می‌یافت...»
