فردریک اوکانر در مقام کنسول دولت بريتانيا در بيرجند و شيراز (1916-1909)، دورهاي از تحوّلات ايران را تجربه و در اين کتاب منعکس کردهاست که نظر به حوادث انقلاب مشروطه و پيامدهاي آن و به ويژه سرگذشت اوکانر در سالهاي نخست جنگ اول جهاني که او و ديگر اتباع انگليسي شيراز به اسارت «کميتة حافظان استقلال» درآمدند، يکي از مهّمترين ادوار تاريخ معاصر ايران به شمار ميآيد.
