خالد حسینی در کابل افغانستان متولد شد و در سال 1980 به ایالات متحده نقل مکان کرد. اولین رمان او بادبادک باز یک کتاب پرفروش بین المللی بود که در سی و هشت کشور جهان منتشر شد. در سال 2006 او به عنوان نماینده صادق در سازمان پناهندگی ملل متحد (UNHCR) انتخاب شد. او در شمال کالیفرنیا زندگی می کند
