سرمایه داری اصولا سرمایه گذاری پول به امید کسب سود است و در روزگاران قدیم سفرهای تجاری به نقاط دوردست، که البته بسیار پرمخاطره هم بود، می‌توانست سود سرشاری به همراه داشته باشد.
در واقع سود تجارت صرفا ناشی از دو عامل کمپانی و بعد مسافت بود و اختلاف هنگفت قیمت خرید کالا، مثلا فلفل، در جزایر ادویه و قیمت فروش آن در اروپا حاصل می‌شد.
