مقدمهی بیژن مفید بر کتاب:
شهر قصه در اصل از یک روایت عامیانه گرفته شده، منتهی من به این روایت شکل تمثیلی دادهام. من در این نمایشنامه کوشیدهام تا نظمی را که خاص زبان این قبیل روایتهای عامیانه است در گفتگوی آدمهای این نمایش حفظ شود.
شهر قصه حکایت دردناک آدمی است که نادانیها، خرافات و سنتها نظامهای تحمیل شدهای زندگیش را محدود کردهاند.
