نمایشنامه «مفیستو برای همیشه» نوشتهی تام لانوی بر اساس رمان مشهور مفیستو، اثر کلاوس مان، شکل گرفته است. رمان مذکور با الهام از زندگی واقعی یک بازیگر تئاتر به نام گوستاو گروندگن که در دوره آلمان نازی زندگی میکرده نوشته شده است. برای گروندگن بازی کردن در تئاتر چیزی معادل زیستن و امری ناگزیر بود، اما از آنجا که او در زمان نازیها میزیست ناچار به پرداخت تاوانی سنگین شد.
