شخصیت اصلی داستان با امید پذیرفته شدن در کشور زادگاهش، ژاپن، در یک شرکت ژاپنی استخدام می شود؛ اما خیلی زود با بی رحمیهای نظام اداری این کشور، سلسله مراتب خدشهناپذیر و انضباط آهنین حاکم بر آن روبه رو می شود. روحیه غربی او با این خصوصیات سازگاری ندارد و موقعیت شغلی حقارت آمیزی را برایش رقم میزند که نویسنده با طنز آن را به تصویر میکشد.
