... در سالهای آغازین جنگ حهانی دوم هستیم. کشور فرانسه مغلوب ارتش آلمان شده و بسیاری از رزمندگان بیآنکه فرصت دفاع داشته باشند، به اسارت گرفته شدهاند. برنار و ژروه دو تن از این اسیران جنگی هستند که با فرار از اردوگاه، شبانه خودشان را با قطاری باری به شهر لیون میرسانند.
این شهر هم در اشغال نازی هاست و مقررات منع عبور و مرور و خاموشی شبانه در آن به اجر درمی آید.
