وقایع رمان در شهر تورین و بین سالهای ۱۹۸۳ تا ۲۰۰۷ میگذرد، روایتگر زندگی دختر و پسری بهنام آلیس دلاروکا و ماتیا بالوسینو است که خیلی زود، و از هفتهشتسالگی، با تلخیها و ناکامیهای زندگی مواجه میشوند. آلیس و ماتیا در نوجوانی کنار هم قرار میگیرند، اما با اینکه حس مشترکی دارند بهناچار از هم فاصله میگیرند و هریک راهی جداگانه انتخاب میکند. جوردانو در این رمان بهکمک روایتهای موازی خواننده را در جریان اتفاقات زندگی آلیس و ماتیا میگذارد.
