در این رمان تاریخی «ناپلئون بناپارت» با «ماری لوییز» دختر امپراتور اتریش ازدواج میکند و صاحب پسری میشود که ناپلئون دوم نام میگیرد. این هنگام مصادف است با حملة ناپلئون به روسیه و شکست و عقبنشینی ارتش فرانسه که در پی آن ناپلئون به دست انگلیسیها به جزیرة «سنت هلن» تبعید میشود و ناپلئون دوم نیز در عنفوان جوانی بر اثر بیماری سل از دنیا میرود در حالی که آرزوی سلطنت بر کشور فرانسه را در دل میپروراند.
