داستان رمان سووشون در شهر زیبای شیراز و اواخر جنگ جهانی دوم رخ میدهد و روایتگر فضای اجتماعی سالهای ۱۳۲۰ تا 1330 است. نام کتاب سرانجامِ یکی از شخصیتهای داستان با سرنوشت سیاوش، قهرمان اسطورهای ایران باستان است. سووشون یا سیاووشان برگرفته از عنوان مراسم سوگواری برای سیاوش است. این کتاب که اولین رمان سیمین دانشور نیز محسوب می شود، نخستین بار در تیرماه سال ۱۳۴۸ منتشر شد
