محمد علی سپانلو در این اثر زندگی و حسب حال شش شاعر آزادیخواه از دوران مشروطه تا شهریور ۲۰ و پس از آن را روایت میکند و گزیدهای از اشعار آنان را در اختیار علاقمندان و خوانندگان شعر فارسی قرار میدهد. این شاعران عبارتاند از: ایرج میرزا، میرزاده عشقی، عارف قزوینی، فرخی یزدی، ابوالقاسم لاهوتی و ملک الشعرای بهار.
