وقایع این رمان تاریخی مربوط به اواخر دوره ساسانی و اوایل فتوحات اعراب است. نویسنده در این رمان، سرگذشت دو شاهزاده خانم ایرانی را به تصویر کشیده است. "آذرمیدخت" که طی یک دورهی کوتاه بر ایران فرمانروایی کرد و دیگری "شهربانو" دختر یزدگرد سوم، که به اسارت اعراب درآمد و بنا به روایتهای متعدد و معتبر تاریخی، امام حسین(ع) او را به همسری خود برگزید.
