این کتاب در سبک اندرزنامه‌نویسی سیاسی است و از لحاظ سبکی شبیه به سیاست‌نامه خواجه نظام الملک و نصیحه الملوک امام محمد غزالی است، اما اثری بسیار فاخرتر و به روزتر و بیان دیدگاه‌های سیاسی نویسنده به خوبی عیان است، در حالی‌که سیاست‌نامه نظام الملک تنها به بیان چگونگوی آداب و رسوم دربار و یکسری نصیحت‌ها برای چگونه حکومت کردن و.... می باشد ولی ماکیاولی در کتاب شهریار بنیان جدیدی را در سیاست بین المل پایه‌ریزی می‌کند.
