آنچه درین کتاب انتشار مییابد فصلهائی از رمانی است که غلامحسین ساعدی در سال 1359 به نوشتن آن آغاز کرد و فصل نخستین آن (در آغاز سفر) ، درشمارۀ نخست دورۀ پنجم ماهنامۀ آرش (تهران) ، در اسفند 1359 انتشار یافت. از آن پس نیز بخش دیگری از آن، جاروکش سقف آسمان، در همان ماهنامه به طبع رسید
