«ایوان دنیسویچ شوخوف» محکوم به حبس در مجموعه زندانهای گولاگ در شوروی سابق به جرم جاسوسی برای آلمانیها پس از به اسارت گرفته شدن در جریان جنگ جهانی دوم میشود. او بیگناه است با این حال حکومت او را به جرم جاسوسی تنبیه میکند. او به ده سال زندان محکوم میشود اما در کتاب تاکید میشود که بسیاری هیچ وقت آنجا را ترک نمیکردند. در بند آخر گفته میشود که شوخوف دقیقاً ده سال در آنجا میماند –نه بیشتر و نه کمتر- .
