این رمان در سال ۱۳۲۷ میلادی و در فضای یک صومعهٔ بِنگِدیکتین در شمال ایتالیا روایت میشود. داستان با ورود دو راهب — «ویلیام از باسکرویل» و نوآموزش «آدسو از ملک» — آغاز میشود که برای شرکت در یک مناقشهٔ مذهبی به صومعه آمدهاند؛ اما در همانجا با زنجیرهای از قتلهای اسرارآمیز روبهرو میشوند و تلاش میکنند علت آنها را کشف کنند.
