رمان پیشرو ۵۹ فصل دارد و ۱۵ شخصیت که ۷ نفر از آنها اعضای خانواده باندرن و ۸ نفر هم از همسایههای آنها هستند. هرفصل رمان هم روایتی از زبان یکی از آدمهای قصه است؛ اینکه چهطور جنازه ادی باندرن را در یاکناپاتافا طی ۹ روز به قبرستان جفرسون میبرند تا با وصیت ادی در قطعه خانوادگی بین عزیزانش به خاک سپرده شود. متن «همینطور که میمیرم» سهگونه زبان دارد؛ عادی، گفتار و شعر.
