هدف ماركس در اثر بزرگ خويش يعني «سرمایه»، فهم رابطه‌ي استثمار با حيات و رشد سرمايه بود. اما براي شرح جامع منطق فرايند حيات سرمايه لازم بود كه از پويش مبارزه‌ي طبقاتي در محل توليد كه در نخستين مجلد اين اثر بررسي شده بود فراتر برود. ماركس به سه جنبه‌ي مكمل حركت سرمايه در سه كتاب مي‌پردازد: توليد سرمايه (1867)، گردش سرمايه (1885) و فرايند در كل (1894).
